Trout Fishing for Trout in Tofino: April - October

The backcountry in and around Clayoquot Sound has many lakes that hold large numbers of Cutthroat and Rainbow trout. With a variety of lakes to choose from you can target one or both species in a particular lake. All of our Rainbow fishing is catch and release only and a number of fish are in the double digits.

Our Rainbow trout lakes are all remote access only and see very little pressure. However even though these lakes are only fished a handful of times each year, the trout are very cautious so trolling flies or using spin casting gear is rarely effective. A low and slow retrieve is the ticket for these trophy fish. Dry flies are an option, but an overnight trip is usually required because it is very difficult to raise these fish mid day.

In the lower elevation lakes we have both Rainbow and Cutthroat trout. However Cutthroat are the dominant species in the warmer waters. This is a great fishery for beginner to intermediate fly casters, spin casters and family trips. The Cutthroat trout are aggressive and opportunistic feeders. They will take chronomids, leeches, fry or frogs and are particularly aggressive towards skated dry flies.

So if you are looking for a one on one guided trip for trophy Rainbows or a family adventure in a remote mountain lake, our friendly, knowledgeable and environmentally conscious local guides will be happy to share an experience that will last a lifetime.
